A1A: St. Augustine to Flagler Beach
A1A · St. Augustine → Flagler Beach Pier
The drive
A1A south of St. Augustine runs down the barrier islands with the Atlantic beside the road for long stretches. It starts on Anastasia Island and passes Fort Matanzas National Monument near Matanzas Inlet, then Marineland and Washington Oaks Gardens, before the open ocean stretch into Flagler Beach and its pier.
It's driven south, the way most people go from St. Augustine, so the long ocean-front miles come last. The road is flat, with low dunes and a speed limit that drops through the beach towns.
Along the way
- St. Augustine (Anastasia Island)
- Fort Matanzas
- Marineland
- Washington Oaks Gardens
- Flagler Beach Pier
Good to know
- FDOT built a buried seawall under A1A in Flagler Beach, shifting lanes west to keep two-way traffic; occasional daytime lane closures are possible.
- Speeds drop through the beach towns.
- The road is exposed to the ocean and has washed out in past storms.
