Drives Montana Bozeman, Big Sky and Paradise Valley
Gallatin Canyon: US-191
US 191, Gallatin Road · Gallatin Gateway → West Yellowstone
The drive
US-191 runs south from Gallatin Gateway up the Gallatin River canyon, past the Highway 64 turnoff to Big Sky, and on to West Yellowstone. It is the only public road connecting the Gallatin Valley communities with Big Sky and West Yellowstone.
The canyon comes first, with river bends between steep forested walls. Later the road opens into meadows and crosses the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park.
It is busy with trucks and Big Sky traffic, so an off-peak drive is easier.
Along the way
- Gallatin Gateway
- Big Sky (Highway 64)
- West Yellowstone
Good to know
- Wildlife strikes are frequent, especially at the canyon mouth and near the Highway 64 junction.
- MDT has planned pavement and passing-lane work around Big Sky, so expect flaggers in work zones.
- The road is plowed all winter.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Montana 511 (MDT).
