The drive

The Mount Donna Buang road climbs 16 km (10 mi) from Warburton, in the Upper Yarra Valley, to the summit area in Yarra Ranges National Park. It rises about 4,100 feet through mountain ash and fern forest, with bends nearly all the way, and ends on the summit road before the summit car park.

The summit is 1,245 m and typically gets snow from June to August, so on winter weekends it draws snow-play visitors. Access is free, and when there is enough snow there are toboggan runs. Parks Victoria says the road takes 20 to 25 minutes from Warburton in good weather.

It is a dead end, so you return the way you came. It shares its first stretch with the Acheron Way, which branches off toward Narbethong and Marysville.

Good to know

  • The road may be closed in dangerous weather or when snow-play traffic builds up, and road crews need time to clear it.
  • Chains are not mandatory but Parks Victoria strongly recommends carrying them in snow; arrange hire before Warburton.
  • Weekends in snow season are very busy; Parks Victoria suggests carpooling or going mid-week.
  • Phone reception can be patchy, and dogs are not permitted in the national park.
