The drive

Walhalla Road drops from Erica down the Thomson valley to Walhalla, a restored gold town set in a steep, narrow gully. It is 17.1 km (10.6 mi) and takes about 20 minutes, and most of it is tight, with bends through fern gullies and dense forest.

Walhalla was founded in late 1862 and had around 4,000 people at its peak. Mining ended in 1914, and the 2021 census counted 35 residents. Today people come for the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine tour, the cemetery on the valley wall, the cricket oval perched above the town and the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, which runs between Walhalla and Thomson River stations.

The road is a dead end, so the way back is the same road in the other direction.

Good to know

  • The road has hairpin bends and few barriers in places, and local police have asked for lower speeds near the town. Take it slowly.
  • Logging trucks use roads across this part of Gippsland, so expect to meet them on bends.
  • The road beyond Walhalla into the Aberfeldy valley is not suitable for caravans.
