Eildon to Jamieson
Eildon-Jamieson Road, Eildon - Jamieson Road, Mansfield - Woods Point Road · Eildon → Jamieson
The drive
This drive runs 62 km (39 mi) from Eildon, near the shore of Lake Eildon, over the ranges to Jamieson, where the Goulburn and Jamieson rivers meet. It is a near-constant run of bends through bush and farmland that climbs about 6,200 feet in all, with a high point near 2,900 feet.
Eildon is about 141 km northeast of Melbourne, and its lake was enlarged when Eildon Dam was built between 1951 and 1956. Lake Eildon National Park has several blocks around the lake, including one beside Jamieson. Eastern grey kangaroos and Sambar deer live in the park.
Jamieson was settled around 1860 as a goldfields town, and about 300 people were working the fields by 1861. Today it has two hotels, a caravan park and several bed and breakfasts, and it is popular with anglers, 4WD drivers and amateur gold diggers. Mansfield is about 36 km north.
