The drive

From Liwa Oasis this drive follows Tal Mur'ib Road through the villages and out across the red dunes to the foot of Tal Moreeb, 25 km (15 mi) in about half an hour. The road is paved and quiet, and the dune faces rise right beside the asphalt. Liwa sits on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, the Rub' al Khali.

Tal Moreeb is a dune about 300 m tall, with a slipface of roughly 50 degrees, and it hosts the Liwa Moreeb Dune Festival. It lies about 25 km south of Liwa. The road bends with the dune corridors. The drive ends on Obaid Bin Kenaish Alhameli Street, short of the spur to the dune itself. Resorts such as Qasr Al Sarab are private and not part of the drive.

  • Stay on the paved road: soft sand can start at the verge, and sedans must not follow tyre tracks onto the dunes.
  • Fill up in Liwa and carry water; there are no services beyond.
  • Plan to be back before dark.
  • Summer heat is severe; early mornings and the cooler months are more comfortable.
