The drive

Jebel Hafeet Road climbs from Hafeet Street at Mubazzarah on the edge of Al Ain up the mountain, about 10 km (6 mi) of hairpins and sweepers on smooth asphalt in about 15 minutes. The whole road is 11.7 km with 60 turns, and it has three lanes: two for climbing and one for coming down. It is the Emirates' second-highest mountain, about 1,249 m, and the road is a favorite of drivers and cyclists.

At the foot of the mountain Green Mubazzarah has hot springs of about 40 degrees C, a lake and chalets. The drive ends on the summit road below the Mercure hotel turn-off; the hotel and its car park are a spur and not part of the drive. The Abu Dhabi Tour and the UAE Tour have both finished stages on this climb, and the Jabal Hafeet Mercure Challenge runs up it each January.

Good to know

  • It is popular, and weekdays are quieter than weekends and evenings.
  • There is only one road down, so use a low gear or manual mode and do not ride the brakes.
  • Cyclists climb the road, especially during race events when sections close for a time.
  • Summer days are very hot; early mornings and the cooler months are more comfortable.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Abu Dhabi Mobility: Traffic Management.
