Drives British Columbia Vancouver, the Sea-to-Sky and the BC Coast
Sea-to-Sky: Horseshoe Bay to Squamish
BC 99 · Horseshoe Bay → Squamish
The drive
The Sea-to-Sky Highway is British Columbia's famous coastal road, and this is its most dramatic part: Highway 99 cut into the cliffs above Howe Sound, from Horseshoe Bay to Squamish. It sweeps along high above the water past Lions Bay, Porteau Cove and Britannia Beach, with the mountains of the Coast Range across the sound, and ends under the granite face of the Stawamus Chief.
It's driven north from Horseshoe Bay, the way Vancouver drivers set out. Most of it is four lanes, much of it divided by a concrete barrier, so this is a drive for the views and the long, flowing curves rather than tight corners. Squamish to Whistler is its own drive.
Along the way
- Horseshoe Bay
- Porteau Cove
- Squamish
Good to know
- Winter tires are required on most BC highways, this one included, from October 1.
- The pullouts at Porteau Cove and along the sound are on the northbound side, the side you're driving.
- Traffic is heavy on summer weekends and Friday afternoons heading north; early mornings are quieter.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check DriveBC.
