The drive
The Gunflint Trail starts at Highway 61 in Grand Marais and runs generally north, then northwest along the Brule River, past Birch, Mayhew and Loon lakes, to its end at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near the Ontario border. It is paved, and was designated a National Scenic Byway in 2009.
The road leads to lodges, outfitters, hiking trails and many of the wilderness entry points. The spring 2007 Ham Lake Fire burned more than 40,000 acres in the Boundary Waters and Quetico and destroyed almost 200 structures; most businesses have since reopened.
The drive is rated Leisurely: 52.1 miles and about 1 hr 10 min.
