Sam Rayburn Parkway: RR 255
FM 255 · Colmesneil → US-96 north of Jasper
The drive
This road runs east from US 69 near Colmesneil, across the top of Sam Rayburn Dam, to US 96 north of Jasper. It begins as FM 255 and becomes Recreational Road 255, the first road Texas ever classified as a Recreational Road, in 1970. The road climbs and dips over pine-covered hills in the Angelina National Forest to the dam, built from 1956 on the Angelina River and first filled in 1965, holding back Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest lake entirely within Texas.
On top of the dam the reservoir opens out beside the road. In Jasper County, from Highway 63 to US 96, the road is officially the Sam Rayburn Parkway, named in 2013 for the Texas congressman who was Speaker of the House for 17 years. The drive ends at US 96 north of Jasper. Highway 147 crosses the same reservoir farther north.
