The drive

Highway 106 is the Hood Canal Scenic Route, running along the south shore of the canal for about 20 miles. This drive starts at the Highway 3 junction at Belfair, the end of the canal, and heads west with the Olympic Mountains ahead across the water.

The road is two lanes and gently curved. Twanoh State Park, about 180 acres of shoreline on both sides of the highway, is the main stop. Farther west is Union, a small town on the elbow of the canal, then the road bends past the Skokomish River and Annas Bay to the US 101 junction at Skokomish.

Homes line much of the road, and speeds drop in Union. The drive is 18.8 miles and takes about 30 minutes. From the end you can turn north on US 101 for the Hood Canal drive from Hoodsport.

Good to know

  • Speed limits are low through Union and other built-up stretches.
  • Day use at Twanoh State Park needs a Discover Pass, and digging shellfish takes a license and an open beach, so check for biotoxin closures first.
  • The road is two lanes with houses and driveways close to the pavement, so watch for turning cars.
