The drive

Mackay-Eungella Road, State Route 64, starts for this drive at Walkerston and runs 67 km (41 mi) to Eungella. The first part follows the Pioneer River and then Cattle Creek through cane fields, with Pinnacle and Finch Hatton on the way. From Netherdale the road climbs the Clarke Range escarpment, gaining about 490 m over around 4 km.

The road is sealed the whole way, but it gets narrower, steeper and tighter as it rises. About 370 m of it is steeper than 15%. It is considered unsuitable for caravans, though large trucks use it often.

At the top the road reaches Eungella township. Eungella Dam Road carries on past the town toward Broken River, which Queensland tourism calls the best place to see a wild platypus.
