Queen Charlotte Drive
Queen Charlotte Drive, SH 6 · Picton → Havelock
The drive
Queen Charlotte Drive connects Picton and Havelock along the edge of the Marlborough Sounds. It climbs out of Picton past the Picton Lookout, then twists above the bays of Queen Charlotte Sound through native bush, before crossing a ridge and dropping toward the head of Pelorus Sound at Havelock.
It is not a state highway: it is a Marlborough District Council road, and it is narrow, with continuous bends and few places to pass. The drive is 31 km but takes about 50 minutes, and the road is a good deal slower than the distance suggests.
Queen Charlotte Drive is also the scenic way between Picton and Havelock. Storm damage has closed or restricted parts of it before, and recovery work with stop/go traffic management is common.

- Storm repairs can mean roadworks, stop/go traffic management and short daytime closures, so check the council's alerts page.
- The road is narrow and winding, with few places to pass, so take bends at a steady pace.
