The drive

Route 17 climbs from Mexico, on US 2, up the Swift River valley to the Height of Land, then on to Oquossoc. Part of it is the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway.

The Height of Land overlook sits right beside Route 17. It has a wide view of the lakes, forested hills and peaks of the Rangeley Lakes region, with Mooselookmeguntic Lake stretching toward the horizon, and it's long been considered one of the best vistas in the state, especially in peak fall foliage. The overlook faces west, and a newly built lot there holds roughly 40 vehicles.

The drive is 34.9 miles and takes about 45 minutes. Rangeley is nearby.
