The drive

NC 194 is the Mission Crossing Byway, named for an 1895 Episcopal mission in Valle Crucis. This drive starts at Vilas, just off US 421 near Boone, and follows Craborchard Creek to Valle Crucis, then the Watauga River through the village.

The original Mast General Store stands in Valle Crucis. It opened in 1883 as the Taylor General Store, became Mast General Store in 1913, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Valle Crucis became North Carolina's first rural historic district in 1990. From there the road climbs over the ridge toward Banner Elk, on a stretch that was once the hand-built Valle Crucis, Shawneehaw and Elk Park Turnpike, a toll road from 1891 and 1892. The drive is 10.7 miles and takes about 25 minutes.

  • The Mission Crossing Byway is not recommended for RVs or buses. Trucks are signed onto a 15.2-mile detour between Banner Elk and Valle Crucis.
  • NC 194 has few passing lanes.
