The drive
The Kahekili Highway, State Highway 340, runs around the north side of West Maui, and the stretch past Honokohau Bay is described as notoriously narrow and twisty. Honoapiʻilani Highway, Route 30, ends at Honokohau Bay, where it becomes the Kahekili Highway.
The drive passes Kahakuloa, a community on West Maui's north side whose name is Hawaiian for the tall lord. A hill east of the village, about 646 feet high, is linked to Kahekili II, who was said to leap about 200 feet into the water from a spot called Kahekili's Leap.
