The drive

US 4 follows the Ottauquechee River east from West Bridgewater, where this drive starts at Route 100, through Bridgewater and Woodstock to Quechee Gorge. It is 25.5 miles and takes about 40 minutes, with gentle curves and little climb.

Woodstock is the main stop. The village green is bordered by restored Georgian, Federal and Greek Revival houses, and Ladies Home Journal once called Woodstock the prettiest small town in America. Billings Farm & Museum, a working dairy farm, is in the town. US 4 meets Routes 12 and 106 in the village, and Route 12 shares the road with US 4 for about four miles along the river.

The drive ends at Quechee Gorge, which Vermont State Parks calls Vermont's deepest gorge. From viewing points along US 4 the Ottauquechee River is about 165 feet below. The gorge was cut by glacial activity roughly 13,000 years ago.
