Route 230: Bonavista Peninsula
Route 230, Canon Bayley Road, Old Days Pond Road · Route 1 → Bonavista
The drive
Route 230 is the Bonavista Peninsula Highway, part of the Discovery Trail. It leaves the Trans-Canada Highway near Clarenville and runs up the Trinity Bay side of the peninsula to Bonavista, through rolling coast and barrens with long open stretches.
Trinity is a short detour off the route on Route 239, about 3 km in. Bonavista, at the end of this drive, has a historic outport and lighthouse. Route 235 runs on to Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, and the peninsula is known for whales, icebergs and puffins. Puffin nesting runs from mid-June to late September.
The drive is long rather than twisty; the draw is the coast and the town at the end.
