The drive

Bogong High Plains Road climbs 22 km (14 mi) from Mount Beauty, a town on the Kiewa River founded in 1949 for workers on the Kiewa hydroelectric scheme, up through Bogong Village to the Falls Creek alpine resort. The road gains about 5,300 feet in continuous bends, rising out of the Kiewa Valley to a high point near 5,100 feet.

Falls Creek sits inside Alpine National Park at roughly 1,500 to 1,830 m. The same workers who built the Kiewa scheme put up the first ski lodge there in 1948, and Australia's first chairlift followed in 1957. The road is open year-round from Mount Beauty, which makes it the main way up in winter.

The drive stops at the resort. It does not include the unsealed continuation of the road across the high plains.

Good to know

  • All vehicles, including 4WDs and AWDs, must carry diamond-pattern wheel chains during the declared snow season, roughly June to early October, and fit them when directed. Chains can be hired in Mount Beauty and Myrtleford, not on the mountain.
  • A resort entry fee applies per vehicle during the snow season, with the checkpoint at Howmans Gap; buying it ahead is quicker.
  • The route from the Omeo Highway side is closed in the snow season, so winter access is only from Mount Beauty.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check VicTraffic.
