The drive
This is the far end of the Road to Hāna, the stretch that runs south from Hāna town to the Kīpahulu district of Haleakalā National Park. It is 9 miles and takes about 30 minutes, which is a lot of time for so little distance, and that is the point. The Hāna Highway (Highway 360) narrows here, follows the coast, and bends constantly around gulches and over one-lane bridges.
South of Hāna town the highway is a county road, and the park's Kīpahulu district lies roughly a dozen miles past the town. The park's best-known walk, the Pīpīwai Trail, leads to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls. The drive ends on the highway just short of the park's entrance turnoff, so the entrance itself is yours to plan.
The bends come in two short, tight clusters, and the rest is moderate. Plan on a slow drive.
Along the way
- Hāna (south of town)
- Kīpahulu
Good to know
- Flash floods and sudden rockfalls can happen at any time in the Kīpahulu area, so check conditions before you go.
- There is no gas or food in the park, and emergency medical help is at least an hour away, so fill the tank and bring supplies in Hāna.
- The Hāna Highway has narrow one-lane bridges and hairpin turns, so expect to slow down and share the road.
- Past Kīpahulu the Piʻilani Highway has unpaved sections and some rental car companies prohibit it, so most drivers turn back.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Haleakalā National Park: current conditions.
