Wind River Canyon: US-20
US 20, WY 789 · Shoshoni → Thermopolis
The drive
US 20 runs north from Shoshoni, past Boysen Reservoir, and down into Wind River Canyon on the way to Thermopolis. The canyon walls rise roughly 2,500 feet, and the highway runs through short tunnels along the river.
The canyon's north end is the Wedding of the Waters, where the Wind River becomes the Bighorn River. Early explorers thought they were two different rivers. The drive ends in Thermopolis, home of Hot Springs State Park.
The 20-mile canyon section was built in 1924, at a cost of $1 million, then the most expensive stretch of highway in the country. It is 31 miles and about 30 minutes, with mostly gentle curves.
