The drive
US 67 runs south from Marfa across high desert and over the Chinati Mountains, then drops to the Rio Grande at Presidio. It is long, quiet and open, two lanes with narrow shoulders, and broad curves in the descent.
About 43 miles south of Marfa the road drops sharply into the canyon of Cibolo Creek at Shafter, an old silver-mining town in the Chinati Mountains. Only a few people still live there. Shafter is known to film fans as a location for the 1971 movie The Andromeda Strain, and its church is the most recognizable building in it.
Presidio is about 18 miles farther, on the Rio Grande, with Ojinaga, Mexico, visible across the river. Big Bend Ranch State Park is reached by FM 170 from Presidio, not by this road.
