Mexico 1: Sierra de la Laguna
MEX 1 · El Triunfo → Mexico 1 south of Miraflores
The drive
Mexico 1 south from El Triunfo to a point south of Miraflores crosses the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna on the way to Los Cabos. The drive is 106.1 km (66 mi) and takes about 2 hr 30 min, with roughly 4,500 feet of total climbing and a high point near 2,000 feet. The tightest bends come first, in the opening kilometers out of El Triunfo, and the curves ease after that.
El Triunfo was once the largest town in Baja California Sur, a silver-mining center with more than 10,000 miners at its peak. The mines closed in 1926. Its 47-meter smokestack, La Ramona, built in 1890, has been restored, and a piano museum survives in the town.
The Sierra de la Laguna is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its high point, 2,080 m (6,830 ft), is the highest in the state. Miraflores, near the end, lies about 2 km west of the highway.
