The drive

This paved mountain road climbs from near Loreto into the Sierra de la Giganta to the village of San Javier, where the Jesuit mission church stands. The drive is 33.3 km (21 mi) and takes about 1 hr 40 min, slow going because of about 3,100 feet of climbing, a high point near 1,800 feet and tight bends the whole way.

The church was built between 1744 and 1758 and has been called the jewel of the Baja California mission churches. It is described as the best preserved mission on the peninsula. The mission itself was founded in 1699, in a valley about 20 km inland from the Gulf that Jesuits found while looking for farmland.

The road dead-ends in the village, so you return the way you came. This drive stops short of the mission plaza.

Good to know

  • The road is paved all the way and in good condition, but several concrete dips cross arroyos that can hold water after rain. Ask in Loreto about conditions first.
  • Bends are tight and steep in places, so allow far more than the distance suggests.
  • It's a dead end at the village, so plan for the return trip.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check SICT (Mexico's federal roads agency).
