The drive
NC 12 north of Duck runs along a narrow barrier island, with Currituck Sound on one side and the Atlantic on the other. The drive starts in Duck, a town in Dare County where the 0.78-mile boardwalk runs along the sound, and goes 15.6 miles north to Corolla.
The road crosses into Currituck County and into Corolla along Ocean Trail. In Historic Corolla Village are restored early-1900s cottages, the Corolla Chapel and the Whalehead mansion, a former duck-hunting retreat. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was first lit in 1875, and visitors can climb its 220 steps. The Corolla Greenway, a mostly shaded bike path of about 10 miles, follows the road.
