Summit Road · Lanesborough → Mount Greylock summit
The drive
Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts, at 3,489 feet and about 2,000 feet above the Hoosic Valley. Rockwell Road is the seasonal automobile road that runs from Lanesborough up to the summit, in Adams.
The first cars reached the summit by the Notch Road from the north in 1902, and a road from the south opened in 1907. At the top stands the 93-foot Veterans War Memorial Tower, completed in 1932 and dedicated in 1933. The Appalachian Trail crosses the mountain too, and the reservation holds about 11.5 miles of it.
The drive is 8.5 miles and takes about 25 minutes, with three twisty stretches in a climb of 2,300 feet.

Good to know
- The summit road is a seasonal automobile road; check with DCR for the current dates before going.
- DCR has closed the Notch, Summit and Rockwell roads for hazard tree removal before, so maintenance closures can come late in the season.
Summit roads open mid-May to late October (May 16 to October 30 in 2026). Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Mass.gov: Mount Greylock State Reservation.
