The drive

Chemin Royal is the road that circles Île d'Orléans, reached from Quebec City over the Pont de l'Île. Wikipedia says the island road is also called Chemin Royal and was completed in 1744. This drive starts at the bridge junction in Saint-Pierre and goes east along the north shore first, through Sainte-Famille and Saint-François, then back along the south shore through Saint-Laurent.

The island road passes through six villages: Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Famille, Saint-François, Saint-Jean, Saint-Laurent and Sainte-Pétronille. The route is 36.5 miles and takes about 1 hr 10 min. It is Leisurely, with gentle curves and about 1,100 feet of climb.

Good to know

  • A new cable-stayed bridge to the island has been under construction, and the old bridge stays in service. Lane closures in the area are possible, so check the ministry's project page below.
  • The old bridge gets a general inspection every two years, mostly without lane closures.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Québec: new Île d'Orléans bridge project.
