Great Ocean Road: Torquay to Apollo Bay
Great Ocean Road, B100, Surf Coast Highway · Torquay → Apollo Bay
The drive
This is the eastern half of the Great Ocean Road: 91 km (56 mi) from Torquay along the Surf Coast and the Otway coast through Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Lorne and Kennett River to Apollo Bay. The road is the B100, cut into the cliff above Bass Strait, with a lot of gentle curves and two tighter stretches.
Lorne is the biggest stop. Its main street, Mountjoy Parade, is part of the road, and the Erskine River reaches the sea there. Teddy's Lookout, at the end of George Street, looks over the town and the road. Erskine Falls is up the river in Great Otway National Park. Farther on, Kennett River is a well-known place to see wild koalas, mostly along Grey River Road.
Returned soldiers built the road between 1919 and 1932, and it was extended to Lorne by 1922. The final section to Apollo Bay opened in November 1932. The road is on the Australian National Heritage List, as a memorial to those killed in World War I.
