The drive

This is the western half of the classic Great Ocean Road drive: 96 km (60 mi) from Apollo Bay to Port Campbell on the B100. It leaves the coast and climbs inland over the Otway Ranges to Lavers Hill, 450 m above sea level, in forest bends, then returns to the sea along the limestone cliffs of Port Campbell National Park.

Lavers Hill is the only town on the way, about 48 km from both Apollo Bay and Port Campbell, with a roadhouse and a tavern. Melba Gully, a temperate rainforest with a short loop walk, is just past it. Near the end, the Twelve Apostles are limestone stacks off the shore beside the road. There were only ever nine, up to 50 m high, and seven remain; one collapsed in 2005 and another in 2009. Gibson Steps is a couple of minutes' drive from the main viewpoint.

The Great Ocean Road was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 as a memorial to those killed in World War I. This drive is a continuation of the Torquay to Apollo Bay drive.
