FM 730 and FM 455: Decatur to Forestburg
FM 730, FM 455 · Decatur → Forestburg
The drive
FM 730 runs north out of Decatur into the Cross Timbers, the belt of post oak woods and prairie that crosses North Texas. North and east of Decatur, the LBJ National Grassland protects some of the largest remaining tracts of this country, more than 20,000 acres in scattered parcels across Wise and Montague counties, and FM 730 runs past some of them, with Forest Service roads turning off toward ponds and trails.
The road is a run of long sweepers, steady climbs and dips over oak and pasture. Where FM 730 ends at FM 455 in Montague County, the drive turns west for the last few miles to the small crossroads of Forestburg.
