The drive

Brockway Mountain Drive follows the ridgeline of Brockway Mountain along the Keweenaw Fault, linking M-26 at Eagle Harbor with Copper Harbor. The county-maintained road is about nine miles long. Its summit is 1,320 feet, roughly 720 feet above Lake Superior, and several pull-offs look out over the lake, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor and the forest. On clear days Isle Royale shows about 50 miles away.

Driven west to east, the road climbs from M-26 to the ridge, then runs east along it. It has low stone walls and no pavement markings. Near the east end, two sharp hairpin turns lead to a steep descent into Copper Harbor, and the first hairpin has an overlook above the harbor.

The Keweenaw County Road Commission built the drive in the 1930s with federal Depression-era work funds, using mostly hand labor, and it opened on October 14, 1933. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. In spring, hawks migrate along the peninsula and gather along the cliffs and ridges of the mountain.

Good to know

  • The road has no pavement markings, and it has low stone walls, steep grades and two sharp hairpins near the Copper Harbor end.
  • The county does not plow it, so it is closed to cars in winter and becomes a snowmobile trail. It is open from May to late fall, until snow makes it impassable.
  • Winter storm damage has kept the road closed past its usual May opening before; confirm its current status with the Keweenaw tourism bureau before you go.

Not plowed; closed to cars from late fall, when snow makes it impassable, until about May, and used as a snowmobile trail. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Visit Keweenaw: scenic drives and road status contact.
