ASP Route 1: Allegany State Park
ASP Route 1, Scenic Drive · Salamanca → Quaker Run
The drive
ASP Route 1 is the main road through Allegany State Park, a 64,800-acre forest park in the hills of western New York. This drive follows it south from the park's Salamanca entrance, off Exit 21 of I-86, up through the summit area by the Art Roscoe ski area and down to Red House Lake.
Red House is the park's busy heart: a lake with a sandy beach, boat and bike rentals, cabins, and the Depression-era, Tudor-style Administration Building, which holds a natural history museum and looks out over the water. From there the road climbs into the forest again and rolls over the hills of the park's interior, where the speed limit is 35 mph, before dropping toward the Quaker Run area and ending just short of ASP Route 3.
It's a slow, sweeping road with a few twisty stretches, more about the forest than the speed. The Quaker side has its own attractions, including Quaker Lake, Thunder Rocks and the Bear Caves.
