Lindis Pass: SH8
SH 8, Lindis Pass, Twizel Omarama Road · Tarras → Omarama
The drive
Lindis Pass is the high point of State Highway 8 between Central Otago and the Mackenzie country. This drive runs 74 km (46 mi) from Tarras north-east over the pass to Omarama, climbing to about 971 m on the boundary between the Central Otago and Waitaki districts.
The road is open tussock country on both sides with long sweeping bends and big sky. The Lindis Conservation Area lies beside the highway, and a car park and short walk at the summit give a view over the snow tussock. Curves are mostly gentle, and the drive takes about 55 minutes.
Tarras is where SH8A from Luggate meets SH8. Omarama is the junction for SH83 toward Kurow and Oamaru.
