The drive

Route 431 leaves the Viking Trail at Wiltondale and winds west through the Long Range Mountains, then follows the shore of Bonne Bay's South Arm. It passes the turn for Woody Point, which sits on the bay, before reaching the Tablelands.

The Tablelands are a barren orange landscape of rock from the Earth's mantle, normally found far below the crust. Along Route 431 between Woody Point and Trout River, the orange mountains stand against green slopes on the other side of the road. The Tablelands Trail, an easy 4 km return walk along an old roadbed, starts from the highway.

The drive ends at Trout River. It covers 30.2 miles in about 55 minutes, with gentle curves, and the road is a dead end, so the return is the same way.
