The drive
Iron Mountain Road is the 17-mile stretch of US 16A from Custer State Park to Keystone. Peter Norbeck, a former South Dakota governor, helped lay it out as a slow, scenic drive for tourists, and a memorial to him stands at the summit of Iron Mountain.
The road is known for pigtail bridges, including one at the exit of a tunnel, and for single-lane tunnels that frame the faces on Mount Rushmore. The three tunnels are the Doane Robinson (12 feet wide, 11 feet 4 inches high), the C.C. Gideon (11 feet 6 inches wide, 10 feet 9 inches high) and the Scovel Johnson (10 feet 9 inches wide, 11 feet high).
