The drive

The highway follows the Tenth New Hampshire Turnpike, built in 1803, and runs alongside the Maine Central Railroad's Mountain Division, built in 1877. The Willey House site is in the park: an 1826 rockslide killed the Samuel Willey family after they fled their home, which was left untouched, and Mount Willey is named for them. Hiking trails in the park lead to Arethusa Falls.
