The drive
NM 152 runs west from Hillsboro, founded in 1877 after gold was found in the Mimbres Mountains. Kingston, founded in 1882 after silver was discovered nearby, once had 22 saloons and a population that peaked at 7,000. Today it has about 32 permanent residents.
Past Kingston the road climbs through the Gila National Forest in many S curves, gaining 1,000 feet within two miles of leaving town. Emory Pass is named for Lt. W. H. Emory, who documented the Army of the West expedition through the pass in 1846. On the descent the road passes Wright's Cabin Picnic Ground, Iron Creek Campground and Upper Gallinas Campground.
The drive ends at San Lorenzo, where NM 152 crosses the Mimbres River and meets NM 35.
