The drive

Route 70 is also called the Baccalieu Trail for its entire length. It runs along the Conception Bay side of the Bay de Verde Peninsula. This drive starts at Carbonear and ends at Bay de Verde, 41.1 miles in about 1 hr 15 min, with gentle curves.

Carbonear overlooks the west side of Conception Bay and was settled by 1631, making it one of the oldest permanent European settlements in Newfoundland. Beyond it Route 70 passes through small communities along the coast, including Salmon Cove, Kingston and Western Bay, then meets Route 80 at Old Perlican before turning east into Bay de Verde.

Bay de Verde is a town of 347 people, between two hills, with a harbour on one side and an exposed rocky shore on the other. Visitors can tour the Bay de Verde Heritage House, an 1896 Victorian home, and other draws include whale watching, iceberg viewing and the Lazy Rock hiking trail.
