Drives California The Bay Area
Page Mill Road to Pescadero
Page Mill Road, Alpine Road, Pescadero Creek Road · Palo Alto → Pescadero
The drive
This is the Peninsula's way from the suburbs to the sea. Page Mill Road leaves the Palo Alto foothills just past Arastradero Road and climbs, steep and narrow toward the top, to Skyline Boulevard on the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. From there Alpine Road and Pescadero Creek Road take you down the far side through redwoods, past the Loma Mar Store, and out to the old farm town of Pescadero, a few miles from the coast.
It's driven uphill from Palo Alto on purpose. The upper part of Page Mill is the tightest stretch, all blind bends and little room, and it's far easier as a climb than a descent. The drive crosses Skyline at the Page Mill and Alpine junction without following it, so it pairs naturally with the Skyline Boulevard drive if you want a longer day.
Along the way
- Palo Alto (Arastradero Road)
- Alpine Road below Skyline
- Loma Mar Store
- Pescadero (Stage Road)
Good to know
- Expect cyclists, lots of them, especially on weekend mornings, and blind bends where you'll meet them.
- Alpine Road east of Skyline is unpaved and closed; this drive uses only the paved road west of Skyline.
- The upper part of Page Mill, from Moody Road to Skyline, can close for snow in winter storms.
- The last stretch into Pescadero is Pescadero Creek Road under its town name, North Street, ending near Stage Road.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check San Mateo County Public Works.
