The drive

Honoapiʻilani Highway, Highway 30, is the way into West Maui. This drive starts at Māʻalaea at Highway 380 and runs west and north along the foot of the West Maui Mountains to Nāpili. The first stretch is the pali, the cliff section between Māʻalaea and Olowalu, where the road follows the terrain between cliffs above the sea and passes through a short tunnel. The pali road opened in 1951 and replaced a one-lane road higher in the hills.

Past Olowalu and Launiupoko, Highway 30 meets the Lahaina Bypass, Route 3000, and westbound traffic continues onto it, avoiding Lahaina town. Beyond the bypass the highway runs on past Kāʻanapali and the Kāʻanapali coast to Nāpili, with ocean views for much of the way. It is 18.5 miles and about 30 minutes, low in curves and long in views.

Lahaina was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire. Visitors are asked to stay out of the parts of town that remain closed and not to photograph the burn zone.

  • Lane closures for roadwork and rockfall clearing are posted regularly by the Hawaii DOT, so check before you go.
  • Through traffic uses the Lahaina Bypass; stay on it rather than driving into closed areas of Lahaina town.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check HDOT Highways: Maui lane closures.
