Drives Alberta Banff, Jasper and the Canadian Rockies
Maligne Lake Road
Jasper National Park, Alberta · Jasper → Maligne Lake
The drive
Maligne Lake Road leaves the Jasper area and runs up the Maligne valley to Maligne Lake, passing Medicine Lake on the way. The lake is 44 km south of Jasper town, and boat tours run from it to Spirit Island from spring to autumn.
The valley was among the areas hardest hit by the 2024 Jasper wildfire, and the burned forest is part of what you drive through. Wildlife around the lake includes bears, moose, mule deer, wolves, caribou and mountain sheep, so the road is worth driving slowly.
Along the way
- Jasper (Highway 16)
- Medicine Lake
- Maligne Lake
