The drive
Vermont Route 108 from Stowe to Jeffersonville is ordinary for the first few miles and then extraordinary. Past the Stowe ski resort it climbs into Smugglers' Notch, where the road narrows to one tight lane and winds through hairpins between huge boulders fallen from the cliffs above. Then it drops down the far side to Jeffersonville.
Carve starts from Stowe because it's where most visitors stay, and because the climb from the resort side builds to the notch. The hairpins at the top are what it's known for; take them slowly, because cars coming the other way have nowhere to go either.
Along the way
- Stowe (VT-100)
- Smugglers' Notch
- Jeffersonville (VT-15)
Good to know
- Trucks and long vehicles are barred: nothing over 40 feet, or 45 feet as a combination.
- In foliage season expect parked cars and hikers at the top, and a slow line of traffic through the notch.
Closed through the notch every winter, usually from early or late November to mid-May; it closed Nov 3 in 2025. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Vermont 511.
