Getting started

Which phones does Carve run on?

iPhone with iOS 26 or later, from the App Store, and Android 10 or later, in early access on Google Play. CarPlay and Android Auto work with Carve Apex.

Do I need an account?

You can plan, preview, import and share routes without one. Driving, recording, and keeping your routes on all your devices need a free Carve account — sign in with Apple or Google.

Drives and offline

How do I drive a route with no signal?

With Carve Apex, open the route while you still have coverage — at home, or before you leave the last town — and turn on Available Offline. Carve downloads the map and every turn along the route, and the drive works from there with no connection. The route's card says “Downloaded” once it's ready. To download every route you open, turn on Me › Offline Maps › Download Automatically.

My route says “Download failed”.

Carve keeps a limited number of routes offline and lets the oldest go when the limit is reached. Open the route again to retry; turning off Available Offline on routes you no longer need frees room.

I left the route — what happens?

The banner turns orange and points back toward your route. Carve never swaps in a faster route. With Carve Apex and a connection, it also gives turn-by-turn directions back to the point where you'll rejoin.

Can I start a route from somewhere other than the start?

Yes — start from anywhere. Carve guides you to the route, and if you're closer to the destination than the start, it offers to run the route the other way round.

The app was closed mid-drive.

Reopen Carve: the drive picks up where you were, with your cleared stops intact. Losing signal, locking the phone, or restarting it never ends a drive. If you ended it yourself, Carve asks whether to resume it next time.

Carve Apex

What's in Carve Apex, and what does it cost?

Offline maps and turns, Group for driving with friends, turn-by-turn guidance back onto your route after a wrong turn, CarPlay and Android Auto, and recording your drives. $29.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, or $4.99 a month. Planning, importing from Google Maps, sharing, and driving routes with a signal are free.

I have a code for Carve Apex. How do I use it?

On iPhone, tap the redemption link you were sent, or open the App Store, tap your picture, then Redeem Gift Card or Code. Then open Carve and sign in — Me › Carve Apex shows Active.

How do I get Carve Apex on another phone?

Carve Apex belongs to the Carve account you subscribed with, on the store you bought it from. On another iPhone, sign in to the same Carve account and Apple Account, then go to Me › Restore Purchases; on another Android phone, use the same Carve account and Google account. A subscription from the App Store doesn't unlock Carve Apex on Android, or the other way round.

How do I cancel?

On iPhone: Settings › your name › Subscriptions › Carve Apex › Cancel. On Android: the Play Store › your picture › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions › Carve Apex › Cancel. You keep Carve Apex until the end of the period you've paid for. Refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com or through Google Play.

Driving together

How do I drive with friends and see them on the map?

Turn on Group — on the route's preview or during the drive — and ask everyone else to do the same on that route. Once you're each within 3 miles of it, you'll see one another on the map and the car's screen, by name, with how far ahead or behind each person is. The pill on the drive map shows how many of you are on the road; tap it for the list. Group is part of Carve Apex.

Does everyone need the same route?

The same road, yes, but not the same copy: a saved copy of a shared link, or of a Legendary Drive, counts as the same route. Send your group the route's link before you set off, and you'll find each other anywhere along it.

Who can see where I am?

Only people sharing the same route, and only while you're sharing too — nobody watches without being seen. Your position is sent only within about 3 miles of the route, so turning it on at home doesn't show your house unless you live by the route. Group ends with the drive, and Carve keeps no history of where you've been. If someone bothers you, open their card to Hide or Report them; Me › Hidden Drivers undoes a Hide.

A driver shows as grey, or the pill says “No signal”.

A grey car is where that driver was last heard from — they're probably out of coverage. When your own phone loses signal, the pill says so, and everyone stays where they were last seen until you're back in coverage. Cars nobody has heard from in 30 minutes disappear.

CarPlay, Android Auto and sharing

Carve doesn't show up on my car's screen.

CarPlay and Android Auto are part of Carve Apex; without it the car shows a short notice. On iPhone, check Settings › General › CarPlay › your car and make sure Carve is allowed. On Android, Carve needs to be installed from Google Play to appear in Android Auto. Start the drive on the phone or from the car's screen — both stay in step.

A share link opens a web page instead of the app.

That's the fallback for people without Carve. If you have Carve and still see the page, open Carve once, then tap the link again; your phone re-checks which app opens carve.run links.

Importing from Google Maps didn't find my stops.

Carve reads the stops named in a Google Maps directions link (share the route in Google Maps, then Copy Link). Links to a single place have no route to import, and some very long routes are cut short by Google's short links — try the full link from the browser.

Your data and deleting your account

Where are my routes stored?

On your phone, and — when you're signed in — in your Carve account, so they're on every device you sign in to. Routes in your account are private to you unless you share a route's link. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Me › Delete Account, on iPhone or Android. It permanently erases your account, profile, profile picture, and routes (with their share links) from Carve's servers, and removes them from that phone. If you can't use the app, email [email protected] from the address you signed in with, and we'll delete the account and confirm within 30 days. Deleting the account doesn't cancel a Carve Apex subscription — cancel that in your App Store or Google Play settings.
