The drive

Waimarama Road leaves Havelock North, runs south on Te Mata Road and then over the farmland hills to the beach at Waimārama. The road is narrow and sealed, with tight bends and short climbs, and it passes the Craggy Range winery on the way out.

Mt Erin Lookout, on the road, gives wide views north over the Heretaunga Plains toward Te Mata Peak and the Ruahine Range. At the coast the road reaches Waimārama beach, the end of this drive. Hastings District Council describes the trip as about 25 minutes from Havelock North.

The road is part of the Hawke's Bay Trails network, and Hastings District Council has run a Waimārama Road cycle trail safety upgrade, so expect cyclists.
