The drive
The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy runs 44 km (27 mi) along the north-western shore of Lake Wakatipu. Glenorchy is about 45 km by road from Queenstown, at the head of the lake where the Dart and Rees rivers flow in. The drive starts on Lake Esplanade and follows the shoreline under steep mountains, past Bob's Cove and Bennetts Bluff.
The road is a narrow, curving shoreline route with limited passing, so it is slow. Curves are mostly gentle with two twisty stretches, and the drive takes about 1 hr. Glenorchy is the end of the drive; the area around it was used for filming The Fellowship of the Ring.
Heavy rain can bring slips, and the road has been closed that way before.
