Potash Road: Highway 279
UT 279 · US-191 → End of the pavement
The drive
Highway 279 leaves US 191 and follows the Colorado River west beneath sheer Wingate cliffs. Along the way are the climbers' routes at Wall Street, petroglyph panels, dinosaur tracks and the Corona Arch trailhead. The pavement ends at the potash plant, and you turn around and drive back. It is 15.1 miles and about 30 minutes.
The curves are gentle. The drive is short, but the river canyon makes it worth stopping.
Past the plant the road becomes the dirt Shafer Trail, which is not part of this drive.
