The drive

Highway 80 is Cooperstown's lake road. It leaves the village heading north along the western edge of Otsego Lake, the long, narrow lake that James Fenimore Cooper called the Glimmerglass in his novels, and the source of the Susquehanna River.

Just north of town it passes the Fenimore Art Museum and the Fenimore Farm and Country Village, and farther up the shore the Alice Busch Opera Theater, home of the Glimmerglass Festival's summer opera season, near the lake's northern end. The water shows through the trees for much of the way.

The drive ends at Springfield Center, near the head of the lake, where Highway 80 meets US 20. Glimmerglass State Park and Hyde Hall are on the northeastern shore, across the top of the lake.

  • The Glimmerglass Festival's theater is right on Highway 80, so expect opera traffic before and after performances in the summer season.
  • Deer are most active from October through December and at dawn and dusk, New York's DMV and DEC warn.
