The drive

The Midland Trail is the name for US 60 across southern West Virginia, a National Scenic Byway that follows the old James River and Kanawha Turnpike. This drive picks it up at Ansted and carries it east over the Allegheny Mountains, through Rainelle, to Lewisburg in Greenbrier County.

Ansted is known for Tyree Tavern, a halfway house dating to 1800, and the Hawks Nest overlook nearby. Lewisburg is one of the state's oldest towns, founded in 1782.

The road has steep grades and mountain switchbacks, and it is a rolling drive of curves through small towns. The whole 58 miles takes about an hour and a half.
