Route 24: Brunswick to Bailey Island
ME 24, ME 123, Sills Drive · Brunswick → Bailey Island
The drive
Route 24 and Route 123 take you 14.7 miles south from Brunswick down Harpswell Neck to Bailey Island. The drive takes about 25 minutes, with 837 feet of climb and a high point of 138 feet. The route follows Mountain Road as the connector between Route 123 and Route 24, then crosses to Orrs Island and Bailey Island.
Along the way the road passes coves and fishing harbors. It ends on Bailey Island after crossing the Bailey Island Bridge, also called the Cribstone Bridge, which spans the tidal channel known as Will's Gut. Its granite slabs are stacked in a checkerboard pattern so the tide can pass through.
Lanes are narrow with frequent bends, and summer visitors add traffic.
Along the way
- Brunswick (Bath Road)
- Bailey Island (Harpswell Islands Road)
Good to know
- Lanes are narrow and bends are frequent, so the pace is slow.
- The Cribstone Bridge is a working road bridge: pull off beyond it rather than stopping on it.
