The drive

US 30 here is the Lincoln Highway, announced on July 1, 1913 as the first transcontinental paved roadway in the United States created specifically for motorists. This drive runs west from Fort Loudon, where a replica of the colonial fort built in 1756 stands at US 30 and Brooklyn Road North.

About 8 miles west is McConnellsburg, where Lincoln Way, the old US 30, is the main street. The town sits in a valley between Tuscarora Mountain to the east and Little Scrub Ridge and Meadow Grounds Mountain to the west, and US 30 now bypasses it on a limited-access highway. The drive then continues about 19 miles to Breezewood.

Breezewood became a popular stop for motorists on the Lincoln Highway starting in 1913. Today it is known for its surface-street gap between I-70 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
